In meetings, we'll hear people talk about Stinking Thinking and know they're talking about the faulty logic or the negative thoughts. But what are some types of thinking that get us in trouble, cause us to view the world through a distorted lens, or just don't make sense when we analyze them? <div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/stinkin-thinkin-and-the-negative-results/></div>

Some family and friends never extend the same amount of trust because they simply will not put themselves in a vulnerable position again. The pain our addiction caused them is too much to forget so quickly. <div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/why-dont-you-trust-me-i-didnt-use/></div>

How convenient and dishonest to say that all the harmful things I did to people were in my use. Then I could blame my behaviors, attitudes and actions on a substance, not the shadow aspects of myself or my character defects. Although my use distorted my thinking, behaviors, and attitudes, it was the shadow aspects or myself and my character defects that fueled my actions as much as my use.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/addiction-is-distorting-recovery-is-transforming/></div>

The more I read, the more similarities that I found between three of the world’s major religions: Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism, with what I believe to be the fundamentals of recovery.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/recovery-why-quibble-over-the-words/></div>

The concept of altering or modifying something is just another blessing of recovery. It's the freedom of choice, something that was lacking in our addiction. This ability to choose allows us to change our old behaviors, attitudes, and actions and begin the process of inner healing through recovery.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/recovery-is-altering-from-within/></div>

People who have relapsed can learn something from the experience. But, for the rest of us, those lessons are best learned from a distance. We can learn from watching what others go through when they relapse. This is a better alternative than learning first-hand.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/relapse-aspect-addiction-not-recovery/></div>

It gets frustrating to keep asking for clarification sometimes; again because we think we are smart enough to understand it the first time. However, asking questions is better than making mistakes. The adage of measure twice, cut once comes to mind. <div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/recovery-what-do-i-do-i-dont-understand/></div>

Is Long-term Recovery Your Goal? marilyn l davis from addict 2 advocate

Posted on March 3, 2018March 16, 2021

We carry out recovery as a goal, much like any other goal.  Want a new car or house and cannot simply write a check?  Then you know that you will have to save money to carry out the goal. Want a better opportunity for a lucrative job?  Then you know that you need either a college degree or specialized training to help this goal. All of these goals take incremental actions to define and bring about your stated goal.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/is-long-term-recovery-your-goal/></div>

The psychiatrist and Course in Miracles teacher Jerry Jampolsky in Goodbye to Guilt calls forgiveness “the ultimate challenge” (p. 149). We cling to hurts, slights, insults, betrayals, wrongs, anger, resentments, annoyances—and on and on, through months, years, decades, and, before we blink, a lifetime. <div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/six-principles-for-forgiving/></div>

Finding North: A Journey from Addict to Advocate

My memoir, Finding North: A Journey from Addict to Advocate is for sale on Amazon. Both Kindle and paperback.

A chance encounter with Gray Hawk, a 74-year old Native American with 34 years in recovery started my journey.
