I know it's hard to accept responsibility for our life choices. I spent years blaming my parents, bosses, husbands, lovers, and even my children for whatever was wrong. And when we're not blaming, we're trying to get everyone to focus only on our positive aspects.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/when-blaming-others-stops-working/></div>

How convenient and dishonest to say that all the harmful things I did to people were in my use. Then I could blame my behaviors, attitudes and actions on a substance, not the shadow aspects of myself or my character defects. Although my use distorted my thinking, behaviors, and attitudes, it was the shadow aspects or myself and my character defects that fueled my actions as much as my use.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/addiction-is-distorting-recovery-is-transforming/></div>

It gets frustrating to keep asking for clarification sometimes; again because we think we are smart enough to understand it the first time. However, asking questions is better than making mistakes. The adage of measure twice, cut once comes to mind. <div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/recovery-what-do-i-do-i-dont-understand/></div>

I'll take a saying from the rooms, "progress, not perfection." Progress towards any task, goal, or work is something that we need to acknowledge. We've done it. Are you giving yourself credit when it's done? I certainly hope so.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/recovery-start-your-day-with-a-done-list/></div>

Ben Rose reminds us of the beginning of recovery support meetings. That was face-time; today it's screen-time. Both are supportive for our recovery. <div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/face-time-and-screen-time-both-support-our-recovery/></div>

Is Long-term Recovery Your Goal? marilyn l davis from addict 2 advocate

Posted on March 3, 2018February 15, 2021

We carry out recovery as a goal, much like any other goal.  Want a new car or house and cannot simply write a check?  Then you know that you will have to save money to carry out the goal. Want a better opportunity for a lucrative job?  Then you know that you need either a college degree or specialized training to help this goal. All of these goals take incremental actions to define and bring about your stated goal.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/is-long-term-recovery-your-goal/></div>

Addictions often begin because we haven’t been taught coping skills to handle the trauma of life. Our addiction becomes our coping mechanism and how we deal with life.<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/addiction-negative-coping/></div>

The difference is once you get past that first one, you have acquired the skills to do so, as well as the confidence that you can do it again. Any wall you will face in the future will feel a lot smaller, and a lot less in<div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" class="sharethis-inline-share-buttons" data-url=https://fromaddict2advocate.com/recovery-life-happens-side-wall/></div>

Finding North: A Journey from Addict to Advocate

My memoir, Finding North: A Journey from Addict to Advocate is for sale on Amazon. Both Kindle and paperback.

A chance encounter with Gray Hawk, a 74-year old Native American with 34 years in recovery started my journey.
