Words of Wisdom about Change

Are some of you wondering how often I can write about change? Get tired of me prattling on about change? Well, today, instead of my words, I’ll offer some more perspectives from famous, not-so-famous, and other writers who inspire me with their words on change.

Sometimes, how someone else writes about changes inspires me, and I hope that these quotes about change will motivate, inspire, and get you ready to change.

Many of these people are not in recovery, but what they have to say about changing has application for moving beyond addiction and towards recovery, and for many of us, that is the most significant change we have ever made in our lives.

Yeah, We’re Back to Change

Change is the fundamental action necessary to take us from active addiction to recovery. I also know if you’re reading this that you’re either struggling with getting into recovery, want validation of your decision to embrace recovery, or just need encouragement in your recovery. I appreciate you reading and let some of these inspire you to keep making changes.

“Maturity is when you stop complaining and making excuses in your life; you realize everything that happens in life is a result of the previous choice you’ve made and start making new choices to change your life.” Roy T. Bennett

“She would be a new person, she vowed. They said no matter how far a mule travels, it can never come back a horse, but she would show them all.” Junot Díaz

“If you don’t change your beliefs, your life will be like this forever. Is that good news?” W. Somerset Maugham

“The fact is that five years ago I was, as near as possible, a different person to what I am tonight. I, as I am now, didn’t exist at all. Will the same thing happen in the next five years? I hope so.” Siegfried Sassoon

Improving Because We Change

“When you listen, it’s amazing what you can learn. When you act on what you’ve learned, it’s amazing what you can change.” Audrey McLaughlin

“No one can change a person, but a person can be the reason someone changes.” Shannon L. Alder

“There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.” Aldous Huxley

“What we call our destiny is truly our character and that character can be altered. The knowledge that we are responsible for our actions and attitudes does not need to be discouraging, because it also means that we are free to change this destiny. One is not in bondage to the past, which has shaped our feelings, to race, inheritance, background. All this can be altered if we have the courage to examine how it formed us. We can alter the chemistry provided we have the courage to dissect the elements.” Anaïs Nin

Changes Give Us Better Options

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” ~Jim Rohn

“Once you admit to yourself that you are or aren’t anything, then you can begin searching for the reason,” Deuce went on.

“And once you’ve found that, you can begin to take steps toward making it better. So, tell yourself you’re an asshole, stop being an asshole, your problem’s solved,” Deuce said in a pleased voice.” Abigail Roux

“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.” Mahatma Gandhi

“The great majority of people are “wandering generalities” rather than “meaningful specifics.” The fact is that you can’t hit a target that you can’t see. If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else. You have to have goals.” Zig Ziglar

Why Make Those Changes?

“When the pain of being the same becomes greater than the pain of being different, you change.” Deepak Chopra

“Sometimes our Biggest Nightmare turns out to be our Biggest Gift. And it all comes down to our attitude. Life will throw us curve balls and disappointments, even heartbreak. But ultimately we can choose if we’re going to be Bitter or Better for the experience.” Kathryn Orford

“The quest for self-improvement and personal growth is now a part of my life. I’m always looking for ways to increase my capacity to grow, develop, and achieve more.

And that means I’m willing to read, observe, listen, discuss, research, and do whatever it takes to become a better improved me. I hope you are too.” Murali Murthy

“We cannot let go of the past enough to live in the present unless we can grieve our losses. We must deeply feel our emotional pain in order to accept that what is happening is not what we wanted.” John Kuypers

Encouraging You to Change

from addict 2 advocate marilyn l davis

Today, I hope that you found inspiration or encouragement to keep making the changes in your life that will improve it. That’s the beauty of words.

Each of us as a writer uses the same ones but strings them together in various ways. All of these quotes spoke to me in different ways. I’m curious which quote touched you or helped you feel more positive today about your changes

One writer’s words will resonate for me. Another writer will touch you, help you feel more positive about changing, or convince you that transforming your life from active addiction to recovery is possible.

If you will leave me a comment about which quote meant something to you and why. Thanks.
